When Is the Best Time to Visit the Dominican Republic?

The Dominican Republic is a popular destination for a gorgeous island vacation. It has everything, from beautiful white sand beaches to abundant natural beauty, plus a unique welcoming culture!

However, not all trips to this idyllic island in the Caribbean were created equal—especially if you’re planning a trip to Punta Cana. There’s the best time of the year to go to the Dominican Republic, and, of course, the worst one!

Read this travel guide to find out what the best months to visit the Dominican Republic are! Happy traveling!

Weather in the Dominican Republic

The weather in the Dominican Republic stays consistently warm throughout the year with the average temperatures between 80 and 90 Fahrenheit.

December and January are the coldest months and are relatively dry (hence they’re called the “dry season!). Then, the temperatures and the humidity gradually rise, reaching their peak in the summer months.

The Dominican Republic has two wet seasons, the first being from May to June and the second from August to November. These months are also known as the “rainy season” and September especially is often labeled as the “hurricane season.”

You may get a better deal on your tickets and hotel accommodations, but May through September is generally not the best time to visit the Dominican Republic, unless you enjoy tropical storms!

Peak Season in the Dominican Republic

The high season in the Dominican Republic starts around November and ends around February, gradually transitioning into the low season of the summer months. It’s called a high season because it’s the most popular time to visit Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic in general!

December and January especially are the busiest months, with many tourists traveling to the island to celebrate Christmas and New Years. Airplane tickets and hotel accommodations prices also rise, so even though these winter months are some of the best months to visit the Dominican Republic weather-wise, it may not be the best fit for you if you have a strict budget to stick to!

If you dislike crowds and want more privacy, high season in the Dominican Republic also may not be the best option for you. Want to know the secret solution? Avoid the crowds and explore the Dominican Republic off the beaten path with our exclusive private tours!

Whale Watching in the Dominican Republic

Every year between mid-December and late March, thousands of whales come to the warm waters off the coast of the Dominican Republic to mate and give birth.

Whale watching in Samana is a popular activity that you can enjoy only during specific months of the year, so if you really want to see the whales in close proximity, the best time to go to the Dominican Republic would be between mid-December and late March!
